APPSA Mpumalanga Chapter News
(November 2015)

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success –these are the wise words of Henry Ford that we as a new chapter can strive towards in the upcoming year.

During the congress in May at Bela Bela, we were inspired so profoundly by the other chapters and what they have achieved in the past two years; we realized that Mpumalanga was falling behind. This lead to Villi Pieterse giving the perioperative practioners of Mpumalanga a challenge: to create the biggest chapter by the next congress in 2017.

We of Emalahleni Private hospital & day hospital then rose to the challenge. We now challenge every sister hospital in Mpumalanga to step up to this challenge. We can achieve whatever we set our minds to.

Progress has little to do with speed, but much to do with direction. This was so true the day that we had our first study day. Thanks to all the help we received from the Gauteng chapter we embarked on this historic event. The first study day that took place on the 28 August 2015 at our hospital, exceeded our expectations. There were 38 people who attended and Three new members joined that day. People came from as far as Nelspruit to attend.

The day also had two vendors who showcased there products.

The way forward is to have more regular study days and a fully functioning chapter board. We hope to achieve this on our next study day which will take place on the 28 November 2015 in Ermelo. On this day we hope to elect a board, and discuss the way forward in achieving the goal to be fully functioning by the next congress day.

The board will have to be dedicated perioperative practioners, willing to give their time and effort. Out of experience we can say that it is very gratifying to know that we are helping in establishing a standard in our perioperative units, be it provincial or private. The board will also help plan and develop standards which will guide new and existing perioperative practioners in the future.

The tentative dates for the study days are the 27 February 2016; 4 June 2016; 3 September 2015 and 5 November 2016. These provisional dates have been planned outside of school and public holidays, long weekends and not to coincide with the Gauteng Chapter dates. This will enable us to support them as they have supported us. The study days will also take place in different venues across the province, as to reach as many members as possible, and support those members that find it difficult to attend study days far from home.

We also tentatively have the first chapter board meeting planned for the 9th January 2016.

The 28th of November will also be our last program for the year. But 2016 is just around the corner and we cannot wait to get started on a fun filled study days full of exciting topics.

In closure we would just like to wish all a merry Christmas and a happy joyful new year. Those who will be travelling, please drive safely. For those working thank you for continuing the gift the Lord has given us.

And just some motivational words to end off with
“The end result…is not an accurate picture of tomorrow, but better decisions about the future.”

Greetings and Blessings to all.
